Malone hosted Bective Rangers in their opening fixture of the 2009 - 2010 All Ireland League Division 2 campaign. Malone who are currently decimated with injuries saw a very changed team take to the field.
Malone failed to adapt to the extremely windy conditions at Gibson Park. Bective Made the better start and this young Malone side had to show some pluck in defence. However Bective had the edge at the set piece both in the scrum and the line out.
The referee penalised Malone time and again at the breakdown and bective took full advantage of this through the boot of out half Cormac O’Beirne who slotted over penalties on 10 and 17 minutes to give the visitors a 6 - 0 lead.
Malone then had flanker Max Porter yellow carded for an indiscretion at the breakdown. Bectives out half O’Beirne squandered two further penalty opportunities after more Malone infringements at the breakdown.
Malone rarely ventured into their oppisitions half and when they did they were unable to get any continuity in their play. Bective missed a couple of good scoring opportunities when poor handling saw good moves fail. Bective did however advance their scre through a drop goal from their full back Tryone Taiepa and a third penalty from out half O’Beirne to leave the halftime score 12 - 0 in favour of the visitors.
Malone failed to take advantage of the wind at the start of the second hald and it was the visitors who increased their lead when they scored through Captain David Campbell who darted over for the games first try, after some slick handling.
Malone replied in kind when a superb driving maul was forced over the line to allow number 8 Ryan Wilson to touch down for an unconverted try. Bective once more replied with a superb try from centre Mike Summeral who scored a superb solo effort.
Malone had the final say when they scored through lock Rick McCullough, the final score Bective winners by 24 - 10.
