We keep talking about the drama as the excitement builds in the concluding weeks of the AIL league and the Kukri Qualifying leagues. In the AIL league Ballynahinch, Ballymena and Belfast Harlequins complete their league programes in Section One. It will be a case of Ballynahinch hoping to do the impossible at Ballymacarn Park this weekend to make 9th place and a playoff to keep their place in Division 1A next season. They will need a maximum 5 points from their game against Garryowen and will be looking to Cork Constitution to deny visitors Galwegians any league points at Temple Hill. Galwegians have a 5 point lead and a 44 point advantage over Ballynahinch. All Galwegians need is one point from their trip to Cork to consign Ballynanhinch to Division 1B next season. Can Ballynahinch survive.

Ballymena have already secured 3rd place in Division 1B and will be looking a morale boosting win at Deramore Park over Ulster rivals Belfast Harlequins this weekend before travelling to play Dublin Uni on Sat week in the playoffs.

Belfast Harlequins have been relegated to Division 2A next season and will be playing for pride on Sat.

Two points separate Blackrock College, UL Bohemians, Dolphin and Shannon in 6th - 9th place in Division 1B as these four sides fight it out to avoid finishing in 9th place and the playoffs.

City of Derry are hoping to secure a place in Division 2A next season via the playoffs. They face Sunday's Well at Judges Road with the North West side seeking a place in the Division 2A/2B playoff final on Sat week.

Rainey OB are looking to the playoffs to retain their place in Division 2B next season. First up they face Dublin side Wanderers at Hatrick Park this weekend.

In the Round Robin playoffs Ulster representatives Bangor held Leinster favourites Enniscorthy to a 19 - 19 draw last weekend. The home of the Leinster side has not been a happy hunting ground for visiting Ulster sides and Bangor can be pleased with their efforts. Due to the rearranging of Round Robin fixtures, Bangor will now have this weekend off.

The Clonmel game against Enniscorthy was due to be played on the 2nd April. When the Munster sides pitch was deemed unplayable and the match was postponed. The AIL committee rearranged the match to be played on Tuesday the 12th April. This would have involved Clonmel and Enniscorthy playing three games in eight days. Enniscorthy successfully launched an appeal against this decision on medical and health and safety grounds. The AIL clubs committee agreed and this resulted in the Clonmel v Enniscorthy match being rearranged from Tuesday 12th April to Saturday the 16th April. The final games in the Round Robin have now been put back one week until Saturday the 23rd April with the second place team in the Round Robin now travelling to play Sligo on Saturday 30th April.

The first of the Qualifying Playoffs take place this weekend when Enniskillen travel to Hamilton Park to play Ards. The Fermanagh side scored five tries on Tuesday night in an impressive 31 - 5 win over Q 2 league winners Carrickfergus at Mullaghmeen to overhaul second place Coleraine. Their achievement is all the more impressive after having to complete playing five games in 15 days.

The defeat of Donaghadee at Randalstown tonight will see the North Down side finishing in 9th place and having to play UCC in a playoff game on Saturday 23rd April to retain their place in Q 2 next season.

If Bangor are promoted to the AIL the teams finishing in 9th place in Q 1,2 and 3 will retain their place. The teams who finish 2nd in Q 2 and 3 will be automatically promoted. Sounds confusing, hopefully by either the 23rd or 30th April we will have the answers.

Qualifying league three Champions Limavady are looking to make it a double this weekend when they face Lurgan in the Final of the Gordon West Cup at the Kingspan stadium. The North West side are the current holders after they swept aside Larne in last years final.

Ulster Bank All Ireland League

Ballynahinch v Garryowen
Nothing less than five points and a big win at Ballymacarn Park will be needed to overhaul the five point lead and 44 point advantage Galwegians have over Ballynahinch. Anything is possible on the final day. City of Derry lost out on winning Division 2B when challengers Highfield scored 59 points against Bective to overhaul the North West side with a better points difference.

Head coach Derek Suffern will use his sides impressive 15 - 10 win at UCD to maintain their belief the County Down side can retain their position in Div 1A. Director of Rugby Ronnie Duncan is looking for the players to carry the intensity and passion they showed at Belfield. The team stuck to the game plan and will need that discipline to defeat Garryowen. Ulster players Jonny 'Mo' Simpson, Jonny Murphy, Craig Trenier, John Donnan, Lorcan Dow, Conor Joyce, Paul Rowley, Sam Windsor and David Busby have been released for this crucial game. Unfortunately Paul Rowley has now picked up an injury that has ruled him out for Sat. He is joined on the injury list by Jonny Madden with Manihera Eden now returned home.

The team for this weekend is expected to include the front row of Mo Simpson, Jonny Murphy, Craig Trenier with James Simpson and John Donnan in the second row. 3/4 will make up the backrow from Lorcan Dow, Conor Joyce, Paul Pritchard and Mike Graham. Aaron Cairns will start at 9 and Sam Windsor at 10. Jordan Gratton and Robin Harte continue in the centre with the threequarters selected from Chris Quinn, David Busby, Davy Nicholson and Justin Rea. The bench will also include Jonny Blair, Zack McCall and James McBriar.

When these two sides met at Dooradoyle in September Garryowen were narrow 14 - 10 winners.

It may have been a difficult season in the AIL for Head coach Derek Suffern but his record is impressive in his nine years at Ballynahich with the 1st xv winning AIL league titles including the AIL Senior Cup, Ulster Senior league titles along with First Trust Senior Cup wins and Towns Cup and Junior Cup successes with the clubs second xv. Derek Suffern has a long association with Ballynahinch rugby club and his drive and determination have been instrumental in the clubs progress in that time.

Belfast Harlequins v Ballymena
Head coach Andy Graham was delighted to see his Ballymena side pick up their first piece of silverware this season as they defeated City of Derry 69 - 0 at Eaton Park last Thursday night to lift the Stevenson Shield. His focus this weekend is to see his team get a bit of form back in the AIL. In recent AIL games the team has lost its shape and need to get back to playing the patterns they played in the first half of the season. The coach hasn't been helped by the impact of changes to the team since Xmas.

For this weekend the team will include a front row of Michael Lagan, John Andrews and Chris Cundell with David Whann and Mark Foster in the second row. The back row will include Oliver Millar, Willie Mckay and Stephen Mulholland. David Shanahan starts at 9 with Ritchie McMaster at 10. Marty Irwin renews his centre partnership with Callum Patterson. James Beattie and Jordan Foster are on the wings with Rodger McBurney at full back. The bench replacements include Bryan Young, Adam McBurney, Dominic Gallagher, Andrew McGrath and Glen Baillie.
