Malone seconds 24 Grosvenor 19

Both teams had met in the Conference league last Sat with Malone winning a close game 22 - 18. Today was no different at Gibson Park with the outcome in doubt until the final whistle.

Malone centre David Irvine opened the scoring after 25 mins with out half Mark O' Connor adding the extras to give his team a 7- 0 lead. Within minutes Grosvenor had levelled the scores at 7 -7. In this tightly contested match O'Connor increased his sides lead to 10 - 7 at halftime.

Minutes into the second half O'Connor increased his teams lead to 17 - 7 with a fine individual converted try. Back came Grosvenor with their second try to narrow the home sides lead to 17 - 12.

With the game in the balance Malone scored their third try through back row Jonny Ogilby converted by O'Connor to increase their lead to 24 - 12. With five left Grosvenor scored their third try to reduce the Malone lead to 24 - 19. It was the home side who had to hold on as Grosvenor sensed victory. It was a case of Dave Heron's players having to dig deep until the referee blew his final whistle. Victory would ensure Malone enter the draw for the quarter finals next week with matches to be played on Saturday the 21st October.

Malone seconds join holders Ballynahinch seconds, Banbridge seconds, Armagh seconds, Enniskillen, Portadown, Ballymoney and Coleraine in the draw.
