League

This week's fixture found the U16s travelling to a wet and windy Carrick (like it's ever anything else... the sun only shines on the North Down side of the lough!) feeling refreshed and eager to get stuck in after a two week break! Head coach Nathan and his assistant Gary eagerly directed the pre match warm up whilst tucking into their away game ritual of coffee and bacon baps (or in Gary's case - two loaves and half a pig).
Kick off was delayed due to the appointed ref not being able to attend so lots were drawn from the Carrick coaches (as we looked on fingers crossed hoping for an impartial ref!). After what seemed an age (well, only about a minute or so... time does seem to go much slower in this part of the country... Hmmm) we were ready to go and within two minutes Corey was found to be dancing his way across the try line, kick converted by Miles (the player - not the imperial distance) we were 7 nil to the good!
After some well constructed team play and some evasive foot work from Corey we crossed the line again! Conversion missed 12 nil to Malone.
After some gruelling forward play (think mud wrestling but without the glamour models and bikinis), wannabe Strictly come dancing star Corey McDonald two stepped his way across the line again to a ten out of ten from all the supporters... or dix points for the Eurovison fans amongst you (yes, you... we know who you are, we've heard you humming the Katie Price euro-pop classic).
Conversion missed 17-0.
Some excellent out of hand kicking and catching by Finn Rogers saw us cross the line again and with the conversion kicked by Miles (yes, still him) we were 24-0 to the good!
Carrick seemed to be in disarray and just to show that forwards can score too we took advantage and after a driving maul Sam Green crossed the line (personally for me, forwards are the best players on the pitch, always putting in maximum effort, and not just standing like backs do, trying to look pretty and taking their hairbrush from their sock every two minutes to preen their curled flowing locks for the crowd). Conversion missed by miles (the distance, not the player this time) and it was 29-0
However this seemed to breathe a bit of life back into Carrick (or perhaps they heard that blue WKD was on offer in Tesco that evening) and on the back of some "unfortunate decisions" that went against us Carrick crossed our line to make it 29-5 at half time.
2nd half found Carrick on the attack (blue WKD, strawberry candyfloss Vape oil and Doritos - all on sale, on the same day - get in lads!), and Malone were struggling to defend our line but after some excellent counter rucking we were on the attack again and after some zig zagging and lightning footwork Corey "Craig Revel Horwood" McDonald danced his way across the line again (I'm not a Strictly fan, so have no idea who this is... but we can clearly see how Lloyd relaxes on a Saturday evening!!) - conversion missed 34-5 to Malone.
After some much needed replacements (yes, another half pig, but only one Kingsmill loaf for Gary - making side-line decisions was clearly starting to affect his appetite) we carried on with our offensive, and after facing some defending skills better employed on the WWE (ah, I remember when it was the good old WWF - the Hulk Hogan one, not the one with the panda), Sam managed to cross the line, conversion missed by Miles (well actually this one was only inches...) and with the game threatening to turn into a royal rumble the ref blew up with Malone the winners 39-5! Well done to both sides who produced a very entertaining game of rugby!
Man of the match this week was Corey McDonald for displaying some dazzling footwork, there was going to be a photo of him in action, but he was just so fast, it was nothing more than a pixelated blur (like the sort of out of focus images you get on Gary's phone...)
Well done one and all, and we would also like to welcome back from injury Patrick Lyons, and also look forward to hosting Ballyclare at home next weekend!
