This weeks U16’s Ulster carpets fixture found Malone travelling to Banbridge on the back of a successful post-Christmas blitz against Randalstown and Ophir, an intense mid-week training session from head coach Nathan only helped to highlight that our lads had over indulged on turkey and stuffing and dare I say it a few selection boxes during the break, Due to injuries some impromptu line out drills were required pre match so every one was happy with the calls! After the usual pre-match pleasantries being exchanged ranging from card checks to strange Ref requests! We were good to go however worryingly no usual pre-match ritual from assistant coaches Gary, William and head coach Nathan were carried out, obviously new year resolutions must still be holding! But any fear was soon to be displaced as within 4 minutes of kick off found Finn rogers gliding (I really need to stop watching strictly on catch up) across for our 1st try of the day, conversion missed by Miles (not the distance! I know It’s getting old) we were 5 nil to the good, after some exceptional off- loading by our boys Dillon was found to be crossing the line 4 minutes later, kick converted found us 12 nil to the good, however Banbridge found some resolve and started to fight back and I mean that literally as 15 minutes later found Finn rogers being stopped from crossing the line by a flying WWE clothesline (can you smell what the Rock is cooking), penalty try awarded 19 nil to Malone.
Halftime saw us using our replacements as Robbie, Mason, and James were swapped out to allow the others to get some game time! Anticipation grew early from the kick-off as our hooker Sam Green danced passed 4 players (here I go again with the strictly comments) only to concede a knock on after a try saving tackle from his opposite number! Remember Son try to keep hold of the ball! 5 minutes later all was good though as after some exceptional hand offs Dillon crossed the Line, Conversion missed 24 nil to Malone, 3 minutes later Dillon crossed the line again this time the kick was converted by Miles, Malone 31 to the good! Banbridge finally had something to cheer about though as within the dying minutes of the game they crossed the line ending the game 31-5!
Some excellent Rugby skills were displayed by our boys from the scrums and line outs to the dynamic running from our backs, Banbridge also should be praised for their competitive spirit as they fought us all the way,
This week’s man of the match was hotly contested affair but the player awarded this accolade showed some exceptional displays of Rugby and was even praised by the Ref well done James McKissick!
Look forward to next weeks game which have us hosting Instonians.
